Finding Axarquia property can be a little more challenging than in the more developed areas of Andalucia – but well worth the effort.

The region has only been ‘discovered’ in the last ten years or so and the main attraction is the mountain scenery, unspoilt white villages and sweet wine made from sun-dried grapes.

Most people searching for property in the region are looking for villas in Competa, new developments in Competa or fincas in Competa. Long known as the pearl of the Axarquia, Competa is one of the best bases for your property search in Axarquia.

Located 700m above sea level with views of the surrounding mountains, countryside and sea, the area is particularly popular with Scandinavians, many of whom have renovated old farmhouses and fincas in the vicinity.

The steady influx of foreigners of all nationalities has helped Competa to be self sufficient and thriving, providing its three thousand inhabitants with a popular municipal market, for example. It is a charming flower bedecked old town with its main centre dominated by a magnificent sixteenth century church.

Stunning though it is there’s more to the Axarquia region than Competa alone. The village of Colmenar lies between the Axarquia region and the Malaga Mountains and was built after the Christian conquest. It has narrow streets of whitewashed houses and used to be the administrative headquarters of a district formed by the villages of Alfarnate, Alfarnatejo, Almachar, El Borge, Cutar, Periana, Riogordo and Casabermeja.

The gentle landscape surrounding Riogordo consists primarily of cereal fields and olive groves. Periana is known for its production of peaches and olive oil and lies in the foothills of the Sierra de Alhama, close to La Vinuela reservoir. It dates back to 1761 although the village was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1884.

Alcaucin is typical of Axarquia villages in that it has steep narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses. Remains of Neanderthal man were found here but the first real settlement was not until Moslem times.

Canillas de Aceituno, Salares, Sedella, Canillas de Albaida, Archez and Competa are all at the foot of the Tejeda and Almijara Sierras; all of Moorish origin and where vines are the main crop.

Competa is a great location but this area of Axarquia has so much more to offer than properties for sale in Competa. People looking for property in Axarquia are typically searching for something of the ‘real spain’, possibly a whitewashed village house for use as a holiday home or perhaps in the form of a secluded cortijo or villa.
